Stepping out

After completing my first Daring Bakers' challenge (yay!), I scrolled through the blogroll and was amazed at the creations that were gracing the blogosphere.
Realizing I had a lot to learn about decorating a cake, I pulled out my Christmas gift from father-in-law. Nope, not the KitchenAid mixer (still too intimidated by it), he also bought me a cake decorating set by Wilton. The set includes a spatula, a package of bags for the icing, many decorating tips, 5 colors, and an instruction book.
I made some icing from a box of confectioners' sugar, 1 cup crisco and 4 TBSP milk.
I was so nervous! (Yes I realize, to the person who does this without thinking, my post is a bit hilarious. I stirred in some Rose coloring into a small bowl of icing. I placed the coupling into the decorating bag, measuring where to cut the end off. Then slid the decorating tip on and tightened the coupling on. I followed the directions for filling the bag. The first cake went very well. I decided to try some violet coloring (my daughter's two favorite colors). I followed the same instructions. Half way through, the tip exploded off the bag POOF! violet icing everywhere! hahahaha My son was standing on a chair watching me. He grabbed the sides of his head and yelled "Oh No!" Which made me laugh harder. I was able to get it cleaned up and even started a new bag to finish the cake.
Here are the results of my first stab at really decorating a cake. **These are
mini-star shaped cakes**
Please keep your laughing to a low roar :)

The kids seemed to enjoy it! Talk about a sugar rush for Jaxson!

I'll bet your kids loved the cake experiments. Jaxon looked like he was enjoying it! Good for you trying something different. I'm sure you'll get more confident with it the more you do.

Aww, these l'il stars are so cute! I am still rather scared of my piping bag and only use it occasionally - so I am starting a class next week to learn!

Hey, how else are you supposed to learn if you don't practice! Kudos for you for doing this and for including the kids!
